You’ll find Wild Fields Brewhouse in Atascadero, CA just off the 101 Freeway, about 30 minutes from the central coast. It’s a convenient spot to stop on your way to (or from) the beach, especially if you want to avoid the bigger names a bit further North. Plus, it’s super easy to find (just a few turns from the freeway offramp) and there was plenty of parking.
Vibes:
Plenty of good vibes coming out of this spot with an arcade meets brewpub and a hint of industrial type of feel. Wild Fields offers activities for all ages including rollerball, air hockey, foosball, and various arcade games.
Tons of seating at the large countertop bar, as well as tables and booths. They even have a toddler play area and are probably the most kid-friendly brewery I’ve been to.
Beer:
I’m a hoppy guy first and foremost, and Wild Fields Brewhouse had me more than covered with a half dozen choices in that category alone. But their menu is extensive (20 different taps at the time of writing this). So if you’re into sours, or lagers, or seltzer, or even dark and malty brews, they’ve got you covered. Heck, they even have a weekly rotating cask ale that usually features a sweet addition.
I grabbed a flight of four opting for Whale Rock Surf (Session IPA), 41 101 (Hoppy Pale Ale), Strata in the Sky with Galaxy (West Coast IPA), and Afraid of the Grade (West Coast IPA).
Little did I know but I saved the best for last as Afraid of the Grade was the winner of the day for me. But no real surprise there. Single IPAs are one of my favorites, plus it had Nelson hops in it.
I also snagged some cans to go where Wild Fields offers mix and match 4 packs. Who doesn’t love variety?
Food:
On the Wild Fields Brewhouse website, it says “great beer deserves great food.” And, I couldn’t agree more. Wild Fields boasts a food menu unlike any you’ll find at a brewery: appetizers, salads, burgers, sandwiches, a kids menu, and even desserts.
For me, a brewery trip isn’t complete without trying the obligatory soft pretzel. So I started there and I wasn’t disappointed. Soft and fluffy on the inside and a beautiful brown outside texture topped with just the right amount of flaky salt and paired with a small cup of homemade beer cheese. It’s one of the best pub pretzels I’ve had to date.
I also grabbed some carnitas nachos. Crunchy yellow corn tortilla chips, house cheese sauce, BBQ carnitas, topped with sour cream, avocado, pico de gallo and some delicious chipotle aioli. The nachos had nice layers of flavor and were a great pairing for my beer flight. And, there was more than enough to share.
Overall:
Even though I’ve had their beer before, this was my first visit to Wild Fields Brewhouse. And, it certainly won’t be my last. Every beer I tried was good and worth drinking again. The food was good. The vibes were good. The service was good. What more can you ask for?
